David Ingham, a local Lancastrian and one of the founders of the Lancaster District Heritage Group, led our archaeological walk in September 2024.

David took us on a journey back through time helping us understand the ground beneath our feet and genealogical heritage.

Such as, between 14,000 - 16,000 years ago, inhabitants started to move back into the area as the ice retreated.

There is evidence that some of the early romans who set up The Roman Fort on Castle Hill about 70 C.E we’re boat men from the area known as modern day Iraq, and there DNA can still possibly still be traced in the area.

In the summer of 1820, Edward Dawson received an award for building the embankment around Marsh Point creating a more usable area that led to the development of the salt marshes. Unfortunately, a year later, the embankment was breached due to an exceptionally high tide and flooded much of Lancaster.

There were even snippets of stories the old ferry at Snatchems trying to rescue a local who was trapped in the water. This ferry helped with local trade across the Lune.
